Birstall Post August 2001 (215)
continued

OUR PICTURE shows famous children’s book character, Mog the Cat, being ‘mogged’ by children from Riverside School (reception class) at Birstall library on July 4.
The Carnival reading promotion is proving very popular at the library with many children joining the promotion and collecting special cards and stickers for books read. It’s not too late to join as the promotion runs until September 8.
There is also one more children’s activity which is for under fives on Monday August 6 at 10.15am. There will be lots of stories and fun things to do and all children under five are welcome. Free tickets for the event are available at the library.

First win

BIRSTALL VILLAGE Cricket Club 1st team finally had their first win of the season against Anstey and Glenfield.
Anstey made an impressive 170-7 but Birstall won by six wickets. Captain Andy Corbett said: “170 was a good score but the wicket got drier and better throughout the day. This victory sees us in the bottom two in the league but keeps us in reach of the teams above us. One swallow doesn’t make a summer and we’ve got to keep winning to avoid a relegation battle.”
The 2nd team’s chase for the championship is slipping from their grasp and without a win in July they are gradually slipping towards a midtable position. Vice-Captain Hamish Carnan said: With the holiday period upon us we’ve lost players to the 1st team leaving us a bit weak but we’ll soon bounce back.”
Birstall Under 10’s had a great day out at a Leicestershire v Surrey Sunday league game. With a large squad they were allowed to take two teams to play a Kwik Cricket demonstration before a large crowd at Grace Road. The Birstall team met players from Leicestershire and Surrey and had photos taken with the players and also collected many autographs. All eight teams who took part received certificates of achievement and Birstall have been invited to take part again in August when Leicestershire play Somerset. Head Coach Rob Drake said: “It’s been a long season with a lot of hard work training 27 children when we normally have about ten players signed on, but it’s worth it when you get days out at Leicestershire’s Grace Road and meeting Leicestershire’s new signing Matt Whiley”.
The club have applied for a grant from Leicestershire County Council Sports & Recreational Dept to help pay for indoor nets at Longslade school. This will help keep the Under 10s and Under 13s together during the long winter months.

Hallam Fields

BIRSTALL PARISH Council have agreed to set up a working party to consider future community facilities on the Hallam Fields site.
The decision was made at a special meeting of the Council held on July 16, convened to discuss the recent public meeting about the new facilities.
It was confirmed at the meeting that both Wanlip Parish Meeting and Birstall Parish Council agreed the parish boundary should be changed as soon as possible so that the site, currently in Wanlip, be made a part of Birstall.

Your Say...

In June I found a plant which is rare for Leicestershire, growing in the large meadow in Birstall Lakes bordering Watermead Way.
Passing by in July I was dismayed to see that it was missing. I can only guess that some amateur wild flower fancier has wished to identify the plant and has taken the whole plant in order to do so.
Can I appeal to all people interested in wild flowers not to take the whole plant but only a leaf or two to aid identification. Incidentally the plant in question was Oenanthe silaifolia.

Many thanks to all of you who supported the Toy Tombola at the recent Village Festival. Thank you to Ann Boden for donating ‘Bertie the Clown’ who was won by Maureen Meachem. This together with the Tombola and the sale of ‘Ribbons for Rainbow’ enabled us to send a cheque for £165 to the Children’s Hospice.
Thank you all again for making this possible.
