Longslade's award winning students at their presentation evening

Award winners

THE ACHIEVEMENTS of Longslade students were recognised at a glitzy presentation evening in June.
The school hall was packed with students and parents, there to celebrate achievements in the field of sports and performing arts.
Miss Sally Waller, Head of PE said: “The last year has been an exciting one for many students. The under 16 boys winning the County Cup Final, the under 16 girls hockey team being undefeated are but two of this year’s sporting successes. The performing arts students have equally shone this year: one highlight was the outstanding production of 20th Century Girls. Drama and dance have equally provided audiences with fantastic show cases. We are extremely proud of all the students.

Supermarket plans upset neighbours

PLANS TO erect four residential units on the roof of Dhillons supermarket on Rose Tree Avenue have angered some residents of Rose Tree Avenue and Hill Rise.
The applicant, supermarket owner Mr Dhillon, also wants to extend his shop frontage.
More than 20 residents attended a Birstall Parish Council’s June meeting to air their views and urge the Council to support their objections.

The plans show three 1 bedroom units and one 2 bedroom unit as a first floor extension with access via an external staircase and balcony.
A Hill Rise resident who asked not be named said: “My first reaction was horror. The building is almost as high as a two storey building already and these flats with balconies will overlook our property - they will be able to see straight into our windows.”
The resident added: “The plans are not in keeping with the area, they look like something from the St Matthew’s estate. Parking is a problem at the moment and these flats will need at least eight car parking spaces - there won’t be any space at all for parking.”
A Rose Tree Avenue resident, who also asked not to be named, said: “These flats will be a complete eyesore in a residential area of houses, not flats. They just won’t fit in and will be overlooking us. We are also worried about the shop extension, if it turns out to be for fast food we will have noise, litter and people hanging about until late.”
Mr Des Mann of Rose Tree Avenue said: “My main concern is that they are not in keeping with the area. There are big vehicles making deliveries and if they put flats there, that means the parking area designated for shoppers will be gone, there will be more parking outside the front of the shop and that will cause more hassle.”
The Birstall Post invited supermarket owner Mr Dhillon to comment about residents’ concerns but he declined to do so, nor would he say what he planned to do with the extension to the supermarket.
Some residents have signed a petition objecting to the plans and have written letters of objection to the planning authority, Charnwood Borough Council. Birstall Parish Council are objecting on the grounds that the proposed units are not in keeping with the area and will cause traffic and parking problems.
Charnwood Borough Councillor Roger Wilson met with residents on site to listen to their objections. He told the Birstall Post: “This application will be referred to a planning committee and I believe it will be turned down.”

Rock & rolling with Elvis

TRAFFIC ON Sibson Road came to a standstill when motorists spotted the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood jiving with Elvis Presley outside the Post Bowl florists.
Posy Bowl owner Dean Vendyback said: “I can’t believe how putting a lifesize resin figure of Elvis outside the shop could have such an effect!”
He added: “He’s become a real talking point, featured in the Mercury and on Central News. When Mayor Mike Jones heard about it he asked if he could come and have his picture taken with Elvis and as a surprise we arranged for his impersonator Dave Cross to be here and perform for us.”

The Mayor and his wife Marj, big rock and roll fans, arrived in their fifties’ outfits and were delighted to dance outside the shop. The mayor said: “We were really pleased to be there, it was a very nice occasion and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The Posy Bowl has a very go ahead young proprietor and we were only too pleased to assist him and compliment him on his initiative as a local employer.”

Children’s day at Longslade college

CHILDREN FROM Latimer Primary School in Anstey and Birstall’s Riverside School spent two days at Longslade Community College as part of a bridging project.
The aim of the project was to forge links with two of Longslade’s feeder schools.
With the support of Longslade students, the children, from year 5, moved around the college site making boxes, badges and biscuits.
Jane McAllister, the ICT co-ordinator at Latimer Primary school said: “Both staff and pupils really enjoyed the day. The children returned to school with a buzz of excitement and showed all their boxes, badges and the one remaining cookie to the rest of the school in assembly. It was brilliant to see such enthusiasm from the children.”
Helen Foster, Longslade’s ICT co-ordinator, said: “My thanks go to all those staff and students who made the days possible, directly or indirectly. it was a real team effort.
Particular thanks go to the following Year 10 students, who assisted with the cookie making, in the Food Room, and helped to ensure that the visitors were taken to the right place at the right time: Rachel Walters, Emma Storey, Swanti Matharu, Emma Hill, Chris Kilby, Katrina Short, Kerry Jones, Rosie Wells, Nicola Rockett, Jade Bedford, Nicola Yorke, Jodie Wright & Laura Young.”

Amanda says “I do” to TA

TA camouflage works for mystery shopper: (left) 2Lt Jonathan Lampier (23) from off Narborough Road, with Lance Corporal Amanda Bettany (38) from Birstall.

LEICESTERSHIRE’S MOST versatile part-time mystery shopper knows a good deal when she sees one.
When the multi talented 38 year old is not secretly putting shop staff to the test she is out recruiting people to her Leicester-based Territorial Army (TA) unit. Even people who go to her to get married are likely to find out what a wonderful idea it is to enlist with 46 Signal Squadron. Lance Corporal Bettany, from Birstall, said: “In my other part-time job, as a Registrar, I’m often at a loose end waiting with one half of the happy couple for the other to arrive. People always seem fascinated to hear about the soldiering I do in my spare time. One chap even said he was going to join up too. I’m a legal cashier by profession. I keep my part-time jobs because they enrich my life so much. Mystery shopping is huge fun - the things sales assistants do can sometimes take your breath away. Helping people marry is just a wonderful and rewarding privilege but it was the TA that gave me the confidence to do everything else and live life to the full.”
She added: “It also trained me as a communications expert and gave me the qualifications to manage and teach young solders. Perhaps the most important thing about being in the TA is the contribution I’ve been able to make to society and my country’s defence. Our team in Ulverscroft Road is always on hand to help the civilian community in a crisis like major flooding.
Overseas, people from our squadron are currently providing communications for the British forces right across the Balkans.”
The Signallers’ special open night will begin at 7.30pm. There will be plenty of military hardware for people to inspect. Refreshments will be available too. Anyone wanting information about joining the TA should ring 01332 348531.
