WOODLANDS DAY Nursery on Park Road organised a sponsored toddle in June.
The children walked half a mile by doing circuits of the nursery grounds, raising cash for Barnardos and the Meningitis Trust, in memory of Lachlan Fewster.

Story of Birstall

THIS YEAR Birstall Local History Society are proudly celebrating their twentieth birthday with an exhibition of old photographs, prints and documents entitled ‘Eight Ounces of Gold, the story of Birstall’.
The exhibition will be open to the public at Birstall Methodist Church on Friday and Saturday, September 24 & 25 from 10am to 6pm. Admission is free.
The story is told on seventeen panels of almost two hundred captioned illustrations. The first two panels start the story in Saxon times and take you up to the Domesday Book which valued Birstall at eight ounces of gold, hence the exhibition’s title. The next three panels tell the story of the gentry who built and lived in Birstall’s ‘big houses’: the Hall, The Lawn and The Goscote.
The remaining twelve panels then look at the life of the ordinary people over the past hundred and fifty years, their schools, housing, transport, churches, and wartime experiences. Birstall personalities are acknowledged with a photo gallery of village characters, including amongst others a suffragette, a champion rat catcher, an MP and a gamekeeper.
There will also be copies of ancient Birstall documents on show, including a deed of land owned by Leicester Abbey apprentice indentures, cottage inventories and the Domesday book entry.
A spokesman for the Society said: “We look forward to welcoming you at our birthday celebration”.

Annual gala draws crowd

Crowds enjoying the last night of the proms concert

JULY 3 & 4, 2004 were once again days of fun and enjoyment for the people of Birstall at their annual Gala.
Saturday despite the weather was a day of music and disco dancing. Sunday was the family day. The day started with a combined service led by The Rev Chris Gray, assisted by The Rev Malcolm Lambert and was very well attended by members of the community.
This year they had their own band playing for the hymns, which added to the quality of the service. Everything was set up and ready to go as soon as the service was over.
The Chairman of the Parish Council Cllr Stuart Jones opened the proceedings, the Fosse Swing Band got into action and away everything went. All teething troubles had been efficiently ironed out, due to the diligence of councillors Jones and Doug Topley (Chairman of the Gala Committee), plus all the ground staff who worked so hard. To name all the people who should be thanked would take too long so we’ll just say a big THANK YOU to them all.
You’ll see from the happy photographs that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and that the weather apart from one downpour was as usual excellent. His Worshipful The Mayor of Charnwood and the Lady Mayoress entertained us with their superb rendering of the Jive, and the Del Boy lookalike entertained in his inimitable style. The stalls, fair, food and drink all added to the flavour.
The Proms in the Park was again a huge success. The Hathern Band always excels and Joyce Rimington sang superbly. The prize was won from the programme draw and the Raffle was also drawn. We would like to thank all businesses that contributed to the prizes. The whole day was rounded off, with a spectacular firework display. Thanks to Charnwood Fireworks.
The Chairman and the Committee of the Gala Day hope you enjoyed yourselves and will join us again next year.
