Birstall Post September 2004 (254) cont.

Parish Council notes

BIRSTALL PARISH Council held a full meeting on August 9.
Dr Durairaj Jawhar was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the Parish Council.
During Open Session, members of the public spoke about the School Lane playing field fence. Comment was made that the proposed fencing was sub standard. It was reported that the matter was still ongoing and a final decision would not be made before public consultation.
PC Dave Cole reported that there had been a marked improvement in the crime figures this year compared to last. There has been appreciation at national level of the quality and effectiveness of Birstall’s NHW which has been consulted to see if any lessons on improving other schemes can be learned.
Comment was made that it appeared that Birstall’s policing provision may be reduced from two beat officers to one. Councillors expressed concern at this and it was agreed that PC Coles, who is doing a good job, should not be left on his own, and that Birstall needed two beat officers.
Councillors discussed a planning application for the erection of a detached house, detached bungalow and eight two storey apartments at 247 Birstall Road. The existing property will be demolished. The Council agreed to object on highway grounds and because the development was out of character with the area.
At a meeting of the Estates and Recreation Committee on June 28, it was agreed that a sample fence panel be tested and erected on site at the School Lane playing field with members present and that health and safety aspects and height be established.

Village doctor dies

A POPULAR doctor who served the community of Birstall for 28 years has died.
Dr Thakorlal Raivadera died on August 5 aged 70. He was born in Uganda in April 1934 and studied medicine in Mumbai, where he met his future wife, Dr Suneeti Raivadera.

Pic Dr Thakorlal Raivadera

The couple moved back to Uganda and came to the UK as part of the 1972 exodus, when the dictator Idi Amin expelled all Asians from Uganda.
His son Shreekant said: “Rather than going to a refugee camp and living off handouts, we lived with family friends in Cardiff initially - there must have been 20 people in a small 2-up, 2-down terrace! I was only a year old. My parents then found work as hospital doctors in Merthyr Tydfill, where we stayed for about a year. And then there came an opportunity to move to Leicester, where some of our family were living.
“My parents were the local doctors on the Gates estate for 28 years. They also worked as casualty doctors at Loughborough Hospital for the same length of time. Dad retired in 2001 following a heart attack, which led to multiple bypass surgery. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2002 and had a major operation that year, which gave him another two years with his kids and grandkids.”
Dr Raivadera loved to walk around the village, being stopped quite often along the way to chat with patients and friends.
He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Shreekant said “We have been touched by the number of cards and wishes we have received - the sentiment has been wonderful.
The funeral was on August 10. The family have asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to LOROS.

Bowling club ladies reach final

BIRSTALL BOWLING Club’s Jan Everitt has reached the final of the County Ladies Singles Championship.
This earned her the chance to represent the club, and Leicestershire, in the National Finals at Leamington Spa. In the first round she took on Liz Chedgzoy from Stratford upon Avon and was leading 16-11 before a thunderstorm, which flooded the green, forced the players off for over an hour.
When the match resumed, Jan settled in quicker than her opponent and won through 21-15. In the second round, which was the last 32 in the country, she faced Norma Turner from Ventnor. Unfortunately, her opponent started off very well and Jan found herself 1-11 down at one stage before a brief rally in the middle of the game saw her only five behind at 11-16. This wasn’t enough however as the Isle of Wight player went on to win 21-14. The final was won by 25-year-old Amy Monkhouse from the Waltham Park Club, Grimsby. Jan now plays in the County Final on September 5 at Blaby against Kate Kyle from Shepshed, who beat another Birstall player, Diane Hurst, in the quarter final.
Meanwhile, Birstall won two trophies at the Leicester City & District Parks finals, which took place at Abbey Park. Birstall won the Singles for the fifth time in seven years with John Hurst beating clubmate Dave Clarke in the final. In the semi finals John Hurst beat another Birstall player, John Walker. The Fours title also went to Birstall with Dennis Measom, Wayne Parkin, Dave Clarke and Andy Wye picking up the trophy for the second time in three years. Betty Crowson and Wayne Parkin were Runners up in the Mixed Pairs and Wayne Parkin, Dave Clarke and Jan Hunt were semi finalists in the Triples.
Finally, the bowls club played host to Birstall Village Cricket Club last month with thankfully everyone bowling underarm. An enjoyable evening resulted in £40 being donated to the Neo Natal Unit at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Forum working to tackle crime

SOUTH EAST Charnwood Crime & Safety Forum was set up three years ago as a successor to the Syston Crime Prevention Panel.
Its aim was to bring together various groups within the community to raise the awareness of crime & safety issues within the South East Charnwood area.
The Forum has a wide ranging role in identifying crime and disorder problems and to actively work to develop realistic and practical solutions.
We have established links with various groups such as Age Concern, Neighbourhood Watch and Susan Jones Drugs Awareness Trust as well as the Local Policing Unit. We are also members of the wider Safety Partnership Group, which provides us with access to Charnwood Borough Council and the police authorities.
Vulnerable victims is a main concern to the Forum as this affects people of any age group, young or old and recognises the concerns and fears that a victim may encounter for some time afterwards.
We seek to establish further links with local business and voluntary groups who believe that they may be able to contribute in whatever capacity.
The Forum, which is voluntarily based, is working on behalf of the local community and needs feedback as to the issues and concerns of the residents and business.
For more information please contact Angela Fielding 0116 222 2222. Ext No:4259

Park thefts

A CO-ORDINATED effort by Police to target the School Lane playing field has significantly reduced the number of recorded offences related to drugs, Birstall and Wanlip NHW have announced.
Two suspects have been apprehended following a spate of thefts of mobile phones and cash from young people on the School Lane playing field. The victims were approached and threatened with violence unless they handed over their mobile phones and cash.

TEN YEAR old Jordan Baker has become the youngest player in Birstall Golf Club’s 101 year history to get a hole in one.
Jordan was playing in a Men’s Medal Tournament when he made the shot, with a five iron on a 129 yard par three hole.
Jordan, of Syston, began playing golf aged six and is coached by Birstall Gold Club’s junior coach Shaun Mullaney. He plays off a handicap of 26.

NWH news & crime report

Last month we had a very untidy house burglary on Stonehill Ave. Tuesday August 3 was the date, in the daytime between 7.30am and 6.45pm. A rear kitchen window was forced to gain entry, the curtains in the lounge and the bedrooms were closed. A lot of items were removed from the property, the value runs into thousands of pounds. The items were removed from the house via the kitchen door, which had the key left in the lock on the inside of the door. The police would be pleased if anybody who was in the area and saw anything suspicious around the houses near The Trees public house during this time would they please inform Syston Local Policing Unit by ringing the 222 2222 number with that information.
The Watch urges everybody to keep windows and doors locked in this hot, humid weather and remember to post code all your items of value either with the UV pens provided free to members of the Watch, OR better still use Smart Water to code the items. This remains on the items for a very long time. Both these items can be obtained from the Watch at the next Saturday advice shop, September 18, or on the third Saturday of any month at the old council offices Sibson Road between 10am and 12noon.

Birstall is top beat

THE BIRSTALL and Wanlip beat is one of the best in the county for detecting crimes, say Leicestershire Police.
In the period between April and June 2004 there were 130 recorded offences and 49 or 38 per cent were detected.
The Birstall and Wanlip beat lies within the Syston Local Policing Unit area, and this detection rate was the best in that area : Syston 18 per cent, Thurmaston 22 per cent, East Goscote 12 per cent and Barkby 0 per cent.
Detection rates for nearby villages not in the Syston LPU were Rothley 13 per cent, Quorn 17 per cent, Anstey 10 per cent and Cropston 7 per cent.
Recorded crimes refer to incidents that have been reported to the police, while detected crimes are crimes that have been recorded by the police and a suspect has been identified and made aware that they will be recorded as being responsible for the crime.
Birstall’s high detection rates have been attributed to Beat Officer PC290 Dave Cole and the active NHW in the village.

WI news

Owing to Highcliffe School being closed for the holidays Birstall & Wanlip WI held their August meeting in the Methodist Church on August 2.
Mrs Gregory, president, was warmly welcomed back after quite a long stay in hospital and subsequent convalescence. As there had been no meeting in July the reading of the June minutes refreshed memories and subsequent business received attention. Mrs Janice Kirk from New Barkby WI gave a report on her visit to the National AGM in June and the results of the voting on Resolutions. She also remarked that she was the lady photographed in County News, with a bow and arrow and how enjoyable that day had been ‘having a go’ at the Archery Club in Countesthorpe.
This was followed by a demonstration and mini-workshop of parchment craft given by Mrs M Wright. After a short talk about the history of this craft and being shown examples of the different ways that parchment can be embellished and used, everyone was able to try their hand at either colouring or pressing out the front of a small card. Some lovely work was produced and everyone felt proud of the results of their effort.
Next month’s meeting will be on September 6 when Christine Jackson will talk on ‘A Weekend Away and Nothing to Wear’. The competition will be for A Flower Arrangement in a Cup.
This will take place in Highcliffe School Hall on Greengate Lane, Birstall at 7.15pm.

PAUL GOODWIN of Gwendolin Avenue has completed a gruelling cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
Paul, along with 11 other participants, rode the 1207 mile route to raise money for three charities: Cancer Research, LOROS and the Friends of Chernobyl children
The route was arranged by the CTC (Cyclists Touring Club) through some magnificent scenery along the north coast of Scotland to Durness, then headed south to Ullapool, across to Skye, over to Mull and Arran.
Following a half day rest the group continued south to Carlisle, Preston, Chester and Delamere Forest, through Wales and on to Bristol, and followed scenic country routes through to Land’s End in Cornwall, meeting there for a group photograph at 5pm on Saturday August 14
Three members had to drop out of the ride due to physical injuries.
Overnight accommodation en route was at youth hostels - and all participants carried their own kit and equipment.
Thanks to all those who contributed along the way and to Mr Steven Hoggar, managing director of Messrs Multi-Wing UK Ltd, who also supported the above charities and kindly enabled Paul to participate in this tour.
The day after completing the ride, Paul was met by his wife Christine and family and together they made the long run back to Leicester by car.
