Highcliffe in song

SALES OF a CD recorded by children from Highcliffe School will help to raise funds to continue instrumental tuition with pupils.
Last year, Highcliffe was one of four schools in the county to participate in the Government’s Soundstart project, which aims to provide the opportunity for every child in primary school to learn to play a musical instrument.
As this was a pilot scheme, Government funding was provided for only one year and now Highcliffe is trying to find £9,500 to continue the project for another year.
Music teacher Carolyn Necklen said: “One class of Year 5 children have been involved in the project and as they have gained so much the school would like to provide the same opportunity to another class next year.” The money is needed to pay for instruments and tuition.
The fundraising was launched with a concert given by the school choir, two of Carolyn’s adult choirs, Cantorum and Yavana, and the Soundstart band.
Every child in the school has been involved in making a CD called Highcliffe in Song, with infants and juniors singing some of their favourite songs. The Soundstart band also performs and the school choir sing several songs including one of their favourites, Never Smile at a Crocodile.
The school held a competition to design the CD cover, won by nine year old Chloe Hicks. It features children in school uniform singing, musical notes and the school’s daisy logo. Chloe said: “I was just amazed and really pleased to win”.
Besides sales of the £10 CD, available now at the school, other fundraising projects are planned including a 2006 calendar with drawings of all the children, with spaces for advertising. Local businesses wishing to advertise can contact the school on 2101112.

Hotel and filling station planned

PLANS FOR a roadside service area and a hotel at the Hallam Fields site have been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council.
The location will be in the north east corner with access from the A46/A6 roundabout.
The plans, submitted by Swayfields Ltd, are for a filling station, a forecourt building for food retail uses and consumption of food and a separate, 60 bedroom travelodge.
There will be 102 car parking spaces, an additional 80 car parking spaces at the hotel, 12 HGV parking spaces and 2 parking spaces for cars with caravans.
A picnic area will be provided behind the filling station, next to the car park.
Landscaping, called a ‘Green Buffer Wedge’ on the plans, will be provided on the southern and northern boundaries of the site, to reduce visibility.

Splash of colour

BRINGING A splash of colour to Sibson Road has earned a Birstall man the gratitude of the public, shopkeepers and the Parish Council.
Barry West (76) of Fielding Road is a keen gardener who for the last 10 years has been bringing plants from his own garden and creating a floral display in the tubs outside J Michael butchers on Sibson Road.
Butcher David Michael said: “Barry is fantastic, what he does enhances the frontage and gives it colour. And he won’t take anything for his work, not even a pork pie! He does it for the love of it.”
Barry said: “Gardening is my life really, I have two greenhouses and lots of plants and the village needs some colour.”
The tubs are planted with petunias, trailing ivy, bulbs and busy lizzies and Barry comes down every Saturday to tend them while his wife is shopping. Vandalism does not deter him - one day he planted 40 bulbs in the tubs and they were stolen within 24 hours. He replaced them the next day. “There was no vandalism in my day, but you’ve got to keep carrying on” he said.
The tubs and the seat beside them have become a popular resting place for shoppers on Sibson Road.
Chairman of Birstall Parish Council Stuart Jones said: “I’d like to thank Barry for brightening up this end of the village”.
