Songs, dance, music and more

A FEAST of creativity was on offer at a Weekend of Talents in June.
Songs, dance, music, painting and crafts were all featured at a series of events staged in memory of Shirley Scott and to raise funds for charity.

The weekend started on Friday June 24 when the Village Hall was packed for a costume evening and supper. Eight lady models were joined by four men and two children to model vintage clothes from Jane Scott’s collection.
Jane said: “The supper was delicious and everyone was so enthusiastic, especially those who had never modelled before and those who had never seen my costumes previously”.
On Saturday there was a Day of Talents in St James Church with singers, dancers, musicians, painters, exhibitions. demonstrations, quilters and photography. Refreshments were served all day and there was a silent auction.
That evening, former members of the Choral Society and the 663 Ensemble with Cynthia Coltman performed a concert in front of a large and appreciative audience.

On Sunday afternoon, St James Monday group provided strawberry teas and in the evening at Wanlip Church the Songs of Praise with refreshments afterwards was a marvellous mixture of hymns, beautifully sung, accompanied by organist Simon Murphy. There were humorous and moving tributes to Shirley from his friends, and prayers from his daughter Lucy.
Copies of Shirley’s Book of Odes were on sale and the event has so far raised £1300 for Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation, Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust and Friends of Uruguay.
The Book of Odes costs £5 and can be obtained from Birstall library, the Methodist Coffee Shop or Jane Scott (2673761). 150 copies of the book, printed by Teamprint, Loughborough, have already been sold.
