Tour of Hallam Fields

THE CONSULTANTS preparing the public art for Hallam Fields are planning a series of artist led site visits in June.
Lucy Banwell from consultants Orangedot said: "Following requests from many local people to have a tour of the Hallam Fields site, we have teamed up with Jelson Ltd to offer a series of guided consultative walking tours, led by artists and experts. These tours are to celebrate Architecture Week 2006, the national public celebration of architecture."
Artists Trudi Entwistle, Jo Fairfax, Martin Heron and Nadya Monfrinoli, as well as Paula and Lucy themselves, are inviting anyone interested to join them for a walk around the development, and an informal discussion about public art, architecture and the built environment. Lucy said: "This will be a chance to gain an insight into the thinking and design behind the development and the public art programme." Booking is essential as places are limited and will be offered on a first come first serve basis, for various mornings between Monday June 19 and Friday June 23. The tours are free. Phone Paula Moss on 01332 600341 to book a place or email publicarthallam@critical.demon.co.uk.

Peter, known to many people in Birstall, died on April 25 while on a visit to France.
Peter was born in 1932 and moved to Woodgate Drive with his wife Jeanne in 1959.
A Christian, Peter contributed to the life of the Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School, becoming a Church Steward, and getting involved with the men's pantomime and the Boys Brigade.
In 1984 he became manager of the Birstall Action Team at 9 Sibson Road, a government scheme that helped the unemployed return to work. One of the projects that Peter was responsible for managing was The Birstall Post, giving a job to its current editor, Jerry Jackson. He said: " Peter was a kind, helpful man, always in good spirits and I enjoyed working with him"
In his retirement he was actively involved in working for the church, attending Bible college, working with offenders and going on missions to Africa and the Ukraine.
Audrey Cuttill was a neighbour of Peter's in Woodgate Drive. She said: "He was a very good friend. He would go the extra mile to help, he was a pillar of strength for everybody and all who knew him loved him."
She added: "His quick actions rescued me from blindness - one morning I woke up and couldn't see and he rushed me to the hospital. They told me if another 30 minutes had passed, I would have been blind."
Eileen Molesdale working with him at the BAT office. "He had a great sense of fun and he will be very much missed." She said.
Peter was diagnosed with cancer in 2004. He leaves behind his wife Jeanne and sons Martin, Stephen and Daniel.

Thriller writer in print

A FORMER pupil of Riverside, Stonehill and Longslade schools is trying to forge a career as a thriller writer.

Pic: Jeremy Garner

Jeremy Garner (35) now lives in Cambridge and works in advertising, writing his books on the train journey to work.
He said: "When I first tried my hand at writing a book in late 2002, I never expected that four years later I'd have two being published within a few months of each other.
"It wasn't easy. At times, it seemed such a bizarre thing to do: spend eighteen months writing a book knowing that the chances of it every finding its way into print were incredibly slim. But in the end it did, together with the other book I've written".
Jeremy writes with the pseudonym Seth Garner and 'the Blood Partnership' is out now with 'Broken Surface' published in August.
At my Birstall schools there was no shortage of great English teachers who encouraged story-writing of wild abandon, Mr Secker at Stonehill and Mr Youngs at Riverside in particular" he said.
Currently writing his third novel, Jeremy has been pleased with the interest shown at the Monaco Film Forum in adapting 'Broken Surface' for the screen.
He said: "If you are thinking about, or currently engaged in, writing a manuscript, I do hope this article encourages you. When they say that all you need is perseverance, they're pretty much right!" For more information visit www.sethgarner.co.uk
