Michael Spencer, Branch Manager of the Birstall branch said: "Whilst Birstall RFC is one of the smaller clubs it has its grass roots here in the village and the enthusiasm within the club has probably not always been matched by its exposure locally. We could not fail to recognise the drive from the players, the increasing membership and the efforts of the committee to develop and see the team compete successfully within the county and beyond."
The shirts were first worn by Birstall's 1st XV in their triumphant win over Andy Reed MP's Presidents XV at Birstall's Presidents Day celebrations. Club captain Rupert Bedder said: "We're looking to be a force to be reckoned with this coming season so winning the first game we played in the new strip stand us in good stead."

Bike week ride to park

SCHOOLCHILDREN RODE their bikes to the Woolly Mammoth statue in Watermead Country Park during 'Bike Week', to show their support for the Park's Connect2 bid.

support the Connect2 bid

The children, from Riverside Community Primary School in Birstall and Herrick Primary School in Leicester, cycled to the statue from their schools and were presented with a certificate by road safety tutors from the City and County Councils.
Connect2 is one of the projects competing for a single grant of £50million from the National Lottery's 'Living Landmarks: The People's Millions' competition, where the public will decide who gets the money.
If successful in its bid, features of the project will include a footpath and cycle path between Cossington and Syston, links to the park from Birstall and Thurmaston and a number of bridge improvements.

Methodist news

Garden Trail
This year's Garden Trail was organised by a new committee. They were disappointed when a torrential downpour arrived a few minutes after the gardens opened on June 16. However once this heavy shower padded many folk chanced the weather and apart from odd spots of rain, managed to round all the gardens.
By the end of the two days the takings for the event were very similar to 2006. The church is grateful to all those who opened their gardens, and the effort put into them to make them look their best.

July Holidays & Maintenance
As usual during July, once the schools finish most of the premises will be closed for maintenance. This year the concert hall is to be redecorated. However there are events planned, by travelling just a short distance. A Strawberry Fayre at Harrison Road church from 2.30pm on July 7 and 'Music in the Garden' at 111 Barkby Road, Queniborough. Cream teas will be available at 11 Broad Street, Syston on July 15 (the home of Rev Ian Mason & Irene). During July there are several changes to our normal pattern of Sunday services. There is no morning service at the church on July 8 & 29, and no evening service on July 8 & 15. On Gala day (July 8) we shall be joining the other churches for the 10am Gala Service. On July 29 we are invited to Syston to meet Pete & Sam Taylor who travelled out from Syston to work in Bulgaria on behalf of the Methodist church.

Cream Teas August 4
Advance notice for cream teas at the home of Shirley & Claude Harrison (107 Allington Drive) on August 4.

WI news

THE RESOLUTION discussion meeting on May 8 for members of Birstall & Wanlip WI was rather low key as several members were away on a parish holiday.
Mrs A Allison gave details of the Resolution and voting instructions were passed on to the delegate from Thurmaston.
On June 5 it was the 89th birthday meeting of the institute and this year it had been arranged to take the form of a birthday lunch.
Only two members were unable to attend at 'The Lindens' in Mountsorrel for a very pleasant meal and the drive through the sunny countryside made up into a happy birthday meeting.
Next month's meeting will be on July 2 when the speaker will be Mr Denis Downes talking on 'Work as a Theatre Critic'. This will be at 7.15pm in Highcliffe community lounge.

Medical centre closes temporarily

BIRSTALL MEDICAL Centre on Whiles Lane will be temporarily closed for building work from June 23.
Practice Business Manager Serinda Shergill said: "The centre is being extended and developed to bring better facilities to Birstall for our patients and the building will be closed while the work takes place." The centre is expected to re-open in December/January subject to building works being completed
Morning and evening surgeries will be held at the branch surgery on Border Drive. The Border Drive surgery is just off Red Hill Way at 2 Border Drive, Leicester LE4 2PF.
Mrs Shergill said: "For those of you who cannot get to Border Drive the Parish Council has very kindly agreed to allow us to use the Sibson Road Council Office opposite the Garden Centre. But due to the limited space all nurse appointments will be held at the Border Drive surgery. However, we will be able to offer some blood taking appointments there" You can make appointments at either venue by ringing 0116 2355885.
Mrs Shergill said: "If you have repeat medication the three local chemists will request and collect your prescriptions from us. To arrange this just go in to any Birstall chemist with your repeat slip and they will do the rest. Alternatively if you have internet access you can make appointments and order your repeat medication on line. Ask at reception for details. If you have any worries please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to help."
She added: "May we take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your patience and look forward to seeing you in our new surgery."

Gym donation

CARL GUNNS' boxing gym on Birstall Road has received another donation.
Local businessman Steve Walker said: "I've always lived in Birstall, went to all the schools here, and I was looking for something worthwhile in the village to support to give something back to the community. The things Carl has achieved at the gym are fantastic, I've always been into sport, and he has got lads off the street and given them something to do."
Steve (29), who runs the management and training consultancy Steve Walker Associates, has donated a slam-man training aid and sponsored two exercise bikes. His company logo will appear on the gym 's new ring canvas and ring posts.
The gym has received a further boost from Andy Corbett, who has donated £200 to help pay for the boxing ring at this year's Birstall Gala. Andy received £1000 winning a Government award for his work in the community. He said: "The money is for supporting projects that get kids off the street and Carl's gym is a very good cause."
Carl Gunns said: "Andy and Steve have helped the gym and we are fortunate to be associated with people like this, people who want to give something back to the village."

Vaccinate your pet

The subject of vaccination has frequently been in the media for both animals and people. How important is vaccination? How often are boosters needed? What about the side effects? Numerous issues have been raised and I would like to cover some of these today.
I believe that vaccinating pets is incredibly important. Granted, not all animals need every vaccine available, but there are a number of diseases that every animal should be protected from. Every year, we lose animals to illness that could have been prevented. Some of these diseases such as parvovirus in dogs and 'cat flu' are more widespread than many people realise. Important vaccines are available for dogs, cats and even rabbits. Prevention is certainly better than cure.
So, how often do animals need boosters? The arguments surrounding this question have been intense. Part of the problem is that protecting antibodies last longer in some animals then they do in others. Another difficulty is that some animals are at greater risk of exposure to disease than others. And what about the old and the young who may suffer more severely? We need to make sure that every animal has enough protection despite this variation. It is generally thought that in order to give maximum protection, some diseases do require annual boosters.
The potential for vaccine side effects has concerned some people. Animals can experience adverse effects but they are usually very mild. For example, a little sleepiness can be expected on the day of vaccination. In actual fact, life threatening disease is much more common that a life threatening vaccine reaction.
Finally, another good reason for giving annual boosters is the health check. Heart conditions, lumps, dental disease and parasites are just a handful of the issues that are often identified during routine booster checks. Even the most vigilant owner could not be expected to detect a heart murmur and some people understandable will be nervous of peering into a mouth full of sharp pointy teeth!
As every year seems to fly by, it is easy to forget boosters. Have a little think… is your pet protected?

Links with Rixensart

A party of 41 people travelled from Rixensart, Belgium to be hosted by members and friends of the Association and took part in the celebration.
The Deputy Mayor from Winterberg, Germany, along with his wife, was also present. Winterberg is a twinning partner of Rixensart and Birstall Twinning Association has developed a strong relationship with them over the years.
The formal part of the weekend was held at Beaumanor Hall where the resigning of the Charter promise was made. This was followed by a buffet lunch and a concert given by two music groups from Belgium and the City or Leicester Male Voice Choir.

Funeral director’s new owner

BIRSTALL RESIDENT and Borough Councillor, Rick Astill has bought the undertaking business of G E Gamble and Sons in Syston.
Rick has worked at the firm for three years and after the death of the owner, Mr Edward Gamble in April 2006 he has run the business as the Funeral Director. He has pledged to carry on the traditions of the firm and to keep the name. He said: "It will always be G E Gamble and Sons."
The business is based in a unique 17th century thatched cottage, which at one time was a pub called the Wolf and Lamb. Rick has kept many old photographs and memorabilia and plans to make the old snug room into a museum. "I believe that this is the oldest funeral directors in Leicestershire and I want to carry on as Edward would have wanted, keeping it as a family run, small independent business" he said.
Rick has kept the existing staff, Chris Meynell the Funeral Assistant and Lynn Padmore, the Senior Administrator and is now joined by his partner, Julia France in running the business.
