Birstall & District Art Society

More about us

From little acorns - mighty oaks will grow ! That was the dream of Norman Sims some years ago when he envisaged developing an art club for the benefit of his art students and friends, to meet and discuss the finer points of painting and sketching.

During the Spring of 1995 he planted his ‘little acorn’ and the first official meeting of the newly formed Art Club was opened. Very soon a supporting group of people who were committed to sharing this dream, helped ‘plant’ the Birstall and
District Art Society firmly on the map of North East Leicestershire.

The Society has enjoyed steady growth and benefits from the support of eighty enthusiastic members, which also extends to a limited waiting list. Norman now has the enviable position of being able to relax and take pleasure from being President of his Society. The boundless energies of the committee reflect in the absorbing list of interests now provided for the benefit of our membership.

We are a mixed ability group sharing a common interest, where we all help each other and where the very beginner is as welcome as the professional artist. Members hail from many parts of the North East of the county.

Annual Exhibition

This takes place, usually in Birstall, annually in October/November. All members are invited to exhibit.

Tuesday Sketch Group

Meeting at different venues each fortnight at 2pm. For ‘outdoor sketching experience’ - this is a free-to-members group and tuition/advice/guidance is available from the experts as required. A chair, pencils, sketch book and/or camera are all that is required. A ‘diary’ of meeting places for the sessions is issued to members.

Mid Week Painting

The Wednesday ‘Paint-In’ meets every week at Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Way, Rothley, from 9am to 2.30pm. Fee £1.50 per person, per morning which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. This ‘Paint-In’ provides a stimulating and friendly opportunity for anyone to come along to paint in their own style, own time and own medium. This is not a teaching class, but all who attend are more than willing to offer help or advice as required. Non members are very welcome at the ‘Paint-Ins’.

Fees

We look forward to meeting new members. The Annual Subscription is £20 plus £1 per monthly meeting. Non members are very welcome to our monthly meetings for £3 per session. Waiting list members pay £2 per session. The Birstall and District Art Society welcomes all enquiries. Please contact the President, Mr Norman Sims on 0116 220 9842
