WEA Birstall and Rothley Branch Website WEA Birstall and Rothley BranchThe WEA - Workers Educational AssociationThe WEA is the largest voluntary provider of adult education in the United Kingdom. The voluntary and democratic traditions of the WEA have created an approach that is unique in adult education. Our PurposeWe provide courses and classes for adults and we aim to interest men and women in their own continued education and in education in general. We believe that education is not merely a means to personal development but also vital to the health of democratic society. The Local BranchEveryone who attends a WEA course is encouraged to contribute to the planning of future courses and events. The officers and committee are elected annually from within the Branch membership and this involvement of students ensures that our programmes represent the needs of the community. The Branch also organises social activities to include members families and friends. WEA CoursesOur courses are open to all adults. There are no entry requirements and many courses assume little or no previous knowledge of the subject being studied. Subjects cover a wide range of what is traditionally called `liberal studies: history, music, social and political studies, visual arts, science, literature, archaeology and natural history. At our own community education centre at 101 Hinckley Road,
in the west end of Leicester, we run a large programme of personal
development courses and provision targeted at people with learning
difficulties, women returners and any adults seeking to re-enter
education. The WEA has two well-equipped computer labs there
to provide an introduction to IT in an informal and friendly
environment - a facility much appreciated by people in the area. The WEA ClassA syllabus or course programme is worked out in a partnership between tutor and students. It is a democratic venture between experienced tutors, with support from professional staff and the Branch. The WEA DistrictThe East Midland District of the WEA covers Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and most of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The District Office (Regional Headquarters) is based in Nottingham where the District Secretary (Regional Manager) is supported by field and office staff. The District oversees the provision of more than 750 courses for over 10,000 students each year.
